Designing your Funeral

There are two facets of the design process. First, we ask you to consider how you wish to honor and celebrate the life. When those important decisions are made, we’ll turn to the issue of how you wish to care for the physical remains.

How to Honor a Life

It’s about bringing those you love together, at a time of loss and delivers closure for family, friends, and co-workers. A funeral or memorial service, whether traditional, or contemporary, it allows for the first step into healing. In today's society you may hear someone say they do not wish to have services, however most times people simply do not realize the importance of their being to others. While there is no right or wrong way to honor a life, funerals are for the living, the ones left behind, the ones that must endure the pain and sorrows with losing a loved one.  Think of your life as an open book, not knowing what will fill tomorrow's pages, only that when your story comes to an end, your legacy will remain and may be shared with your family's future generation. How do you want to be remembered? At Light Memorial we believe there are possibilities in honoring a life and we promise is to provide you with the guidance and tools in doing so.

You can have your service anywhere, and any way, that you desire. Your choices may include the place of celebration, day of the week, and time of day; the musical selection, what prayers will be said, and what songs will be played. We can arrange to have doves, butterflies, or balloons released at the close of the service. Whether the service ends in prayer or lanterns rise to light the sky at night our service options to you are endless. Keepsake gifts of wildflower seeds or a tree seedling can be given. We’re here to help you create the most memorable and meaningful service to honor your loved one.

Burial or Cremation?

You have the choice between burial and cremation. Usually, people are clear on this point. In fact, your loved one may have told you, or someone else, exactly how they wish to be cared for. But it can be a hard decision for some families, especially when the wishes of the deceased were never clearly stated. If that's the case, please know we're able to help you come to the perfect decision for your loved one, and for you.

Once you decide, the finer details come into focus. If you've chosen burial, then selection of the casket, vault, and desired cemetery follows. Naturally, we will lead you through the entire process.

If cremation is your choice, then you'll need to make the next decision: if you would like your loved one to be present for the services or you may wish to have a memorial service without viewing of the deceased. Next whether the cremated remains will be placed in a mausoleum niche, buried on the cemetery grounds or a specified place of your own, scattered at a favorite place or even several designated locations.  You may decide to keep your loved one at home in an urn, or in multiple small keepsake urns.  Other available options include containing the ashes in jewelry, pottery, concrete, glass artwork, or even diamonds.  We can refer you to companies that will disburse the ashes into fireworks and balloons for a release celebrations. There are companies that scatter cremated remains at sea, from a plane, and even space flight.

In some communities, there's the option for a 'green burial.' If that's what your loved one would prefer, we'll help you select an environmentally-friendly choice.

What's Next?

There is no cost obligation when preplanning a funeral. It's as simple as contacting the funeral home to gather your wishes and biographical information.  It is the most selfless, loving act that you can do for your family.
