Bette Gibbons

Bette E. (Hamm) Gibbons, 91, recently of Greeneville and formerly of Monrovia, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017, in the comfort of her home in Tennessee. She was born on Friday, January 29, 1926, in Martinsville, to the late Elbert and Opal J. (Storms) Hamm. An eighty-year resident of Morgan county, Bette graduated from Martinsville High School in 1944. At 19 years old, she attended a dance at Hollybrook Lake where she met a handsome soldier from Monrovia named, Harold "John D." Gibbons. Bette knew at first sight that she would one day marry Gibbons and the two peas-in-a-pod were united in marriage two years later, on Bette’s 21st birthday. Their marriage was admired by many, as they truly enjoyed each other’s company and were honestly best friends and soulmates. Many of Bette’s early years were spent working alongside her family at the rodeo and barrel racing in Martinsville. She also enjoyed roller-skating, fishing, dancing and above all, helping others. Bette had a soft spot for the elderly and took great pleasure in preparing and delivering meals to them and anyone in need. Always possessing a strong faith and kind word, Mrs. Gibbons was baptized in Martinsville at the Church of Christ and attended many services throughout the years with her daughter at the United Methodist Church in Monrovia. A devoted wife, wonderful mother and proud mammy, Bette was a kind soul and will be deeply missed by her loving family. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Jo and Johnny Reaves and her cherished granddaughter, Brittany Richardson all of Greeneville, TN; and special friend, Pongie Moore (husband, Loren) of Monrovia. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Gibbons; a beloved infant daughter, Billie Sue Gibbons; and brothers, Bill E. Hamm and Jerry Austin Hamm. Visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm, on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia, with the Celebration of Life Service to begin promptly at 1 pm. A horse drawn carriage will lead the procession and deliver Bette to her final resting place in West Union Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Pastor Jack Elliott.
