Richard E. Smith

Richard E. Smith, 70, of Mooresville, passed from this life on January 31, 2022, while in the care of the Springs of Mooresville, after a 40-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was born on June 23, 1951, in Indianapolis to Russell Eugene and Katherine Smith. The oldest child, Richard and his siblings spent their early years in Kentucky, later growing up in Indianapolis. At the tender age of 17, the pretty young neighbor girl, Jackie, caught his eye, and the two hit it off. In June of 1969, the young couple married. Jackie’s love of horses and deep desire for the country life brought the pair to settle in the quiet quaint life of Morgan County. A faithful member of the Spring Hill Christian Church, Richard was employed as a trusted mechanic for several different filling stations through the years, later working at the Chrysler Plant on Shadeland Avenue for three years, before finding his niche as a talented mill wright for IUPU for sixteen years. When the ravages of MS began to take a toll on his body, he was forced to retire in 2001. A motorcycle, horse, and muscle car enthusiast, he possessed a knack for wheeling and dealing, once trading a pony for a motorcycle. Although his demeanor was quiet, and his nature was kind, he had a great sense of humor, which helped him to see light in life, despite the inevitable outcome of a horrific disease. Richard fought the good fight for as long as he humanly could, but ultimately was forced to succumb to the debilitating disease known as MS. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Richard is preceded in death by his father Russell Smith, and siblings Roger, Donald, and infant Smith. He is survived by his loving wife Jaquline “Jackie” F. (Graham) Smith of Mooresville; along with siblings Virginia Mantooth of Clayton, and Terry Smith of Liberty, KY. Cremation Arrangements have been entrusted to Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia, and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Richard to the Morgan County Humane Society, 690 W. Mitchell Ave., Martinsville, IN, 46151.
