Allen D. Tutewiler
January 27, 1938 - January 17, 2022
Allen “Big Al” Dale Tutewiler, 83, long time Monrovia resident and native to Mooresville, left this world unexpectedly on Monday, January 17, 2022. He was born in Indianapolis on January 27, 1938, to the late Albert W. and Helen W. (Opple) Tutewiler. After proudly graduating from Mooresville High School with the class of 1957, Allen humbly enlisted in the United State Air Force. Upon his discharge, he was introduced to a young headstrong brunette named Sue. To say that it was love at first sight would be an understatement; he eagerly asked her for a first date, and of course she said yes. Smitten by all he saw in her, he asked for her hand in marriage that night. While she didn’t respond just yet, she ended the evening with a letter to her sister informing her that she had met her future husband, denoting him as her “cream puff in a dream”. On March 3, 1962, Al and Sue said, “I do”, beginning their 59-year marital love affair, adding three delightful daughters to complete their happy family. Originally planting roots in Mooresville, Sue yearned for the quiet life, and the family moved to the rural solitude of Monrovia. Taking over his grandfather’s business, Mooresville Block and Coal, Big Al carried on the family tradition building the company to a higher level, later renaming it to Majestic Block, deservingly retiring in 2000. Generous and kind, he was a self-made man, and his strength radiated from within. A member of the Monrovia Christian Church and the West Newton Masonic Lodge 70 F&AM, Allen was a regular at the Liar’s Table in the Monrovia Family Restaurant, formerly the Corner Café, where he and the guys reveled in spinning tall tales and telling colorful jokes. Surrounded by his four girls throughout the years, Sue molded him into the teddy bear we all knew and loved. He instilled the value of hard work and dedication, giving his daughters difficult jobs, without instruction, knowing they were up for the challenge. A genuine family man, he never missed an opportunity to take a road trip, vacation, or attend the kids and grandkids sporting events. He was their biggest fan, cheering them on and occasionally shouting from the stands when the refs clearly made a bad call. He loved collecting treasures with his best friend, along with wheeling and dealing the wares he acquired, often selling them before making it home. Above all, Big Al held his family close to his heart. While he wasn’t a verbally affectionate man, his family felt his deep love and devotion to them through his unwavering presence. He will be deeply and profoundly missed. Al leaves behind his devoted wife Sue (Thomas) Tutewiler; children Julie Singleton (Dennis), Amy Faulkenberg (John), and Tami Knight (Steve), all of Monrovia; grandchildren Kurtiss Faulkenberg (Emily), Dylan Faulkenberg (Emma), Taylor Faulkenberg, Logan Faulkenberg, Foster Knight, all of Monrovia, Jacki Wantz (Chris) of Wausau, WI, and Alexis Singleton of Dayton, OH; great grandchildren Paisley and Beau Faulkenberg; along with his younger sister Karen Overpeck of Mooresville. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation on Friday, January 21, from 4 to 7pm., with the Monrovia Masonic Lodge presenting a brief Memorial at 7:00pm. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, from noon until the Celebration of Life Service begins at 2:00pm. Pastor Richard Dickison will officiate services and Allen will be taken to his final resting place via “Big Al’s Tonka Toy” in White Lick Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mooresville High School Alumni Association. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home during services or donate online at https://morgan.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=1599.
