Yvonne "Vonnie" C. Johnson

Yvonne “Vonnie” C. (Palmer) Johnson, 83, of Monrovia, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, while in the care of Woodland Terrace of Danville. She made her entrance into the world in Jacksboro, TN on July 26, 1941, to the late Wayne and Nell (Ray) Palmer. A proud graduate with the class of 1960 from Monrovia High School, Vonnie met her future husband, Steve Johnson when she was a cheerleader for the school’s basketball team, and he was one of the players. The high school sweethearts fell fast in love and were dubbed king and queen of the prom. They were joyously united in marriage on May 4, 1963, and spent over 58 years together. Very involved in the lives of her three children, Vonnie supported all their endeavors. She coached her daughter’s softball team, and was one of the boosters for baseball, basketball, and softball. The family enjoyed trips to King’s Island, as well as visiting Fripp Island in South Carolina. A meticulous housekeeper, and an excellent cook, she loved to decorate for the holidays, especially Christmas. A past member of the Monrovia United Methodist Church, she was a substitute teacher at Monrovia Elementary School and devoted several years of service working for Ted Everett Auction as a bookkeeper. As the kids grew and began lives of their own, Vonnie and Steve purchased their home on Whipoorwill Lake to live it up. They had progressive dinner parties with the neighbors and thoroughly enjoyed their retirement era. With a green thumb Vonnie loved spending time in her flower beds, as well as her vegetable garden, even canning the fruits of her labor. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed making clothes for the kids. A truly selfless soul, she was caring, supportive, and loved unconditionally. She never made an enemy, had a positive outlook on life, but most importantly, her family was her world. She will be forever missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Max Steven “Steve” Johnson. Vonnie leaves behind her children, Brian (Dawn) Johnson of Cottondale, AL, Gina (Tony) Longere of Monrovia, and Brad (Jenny) Johnson of Chapin, SC; brothers, Gene (Sydney) Palmer of Monrovia, and Wayne (Sharon) Palmer of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Isabella Johnson, McKenna Johnson, Chris (Catie) White, all of AL, Alaina Longere of Indianapolis, Tara (Justin) Longere-House of Whiteland, Zach (Ashley) Johnson of Charleston, SC, Mitchell Johnson, and Nolan Johnson, both of Clemson, SC, and great grandchildren, Payton, Finley, Olivia, Maverick, and Tyler. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30pm, on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11am, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the funeral home, with an additional hour of calling prior. Pastor Jack Elliott will officiate services and burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall.
