Richard R. Kitchens

Richard R. Kitchens, age 80, of Monrovia and Wilbur area, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, with his loving wife at his bedside. Arriving into the world on December 12, 1945, in Hamilton County, he was the third of nine children born to the late Robert and Maxine (Roach) Kitchens. Raised on a farm, Richard learned the value of hard work, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and a devotion to family early in life. He was a graduate of Carmel High School. For over 26 years, Richard dedicated his career to National Wine & Spirits, first as a driver and then in the warehouse before enjoying a well-earned retirement. On May 17, 1986, he married the love of his life, Peggy (Luker) Kitchens. Together, they shared over 40 wonderful years of marriage, and a friendship built on love, mutual respect, and quiet devotion. To say Richard cherished Peggy would be an understatement; his daily routine centered around taking care of her and spoiling her every chance he got. Richard was a man of meticulous detail, quiet strength, and genuine kindness. Thoughtful and caring, he possessed an incredible "green thumb." Every autumn—his favorite time of year, he would carefully dig up his cherished elephant ear plants, storing them to re-plant each spring, growing them bigger and grander with every passing season. His house plants flourished under his precise science and attentive care. Richard loved being in nature, whether deer hunting or reminiscing about growing up coon hunting. A special place was held in his heart for his beloved dog, Mabel, a 10-year-old Shepherd/Lab mix whom he named, loved dearly, and considered his "baby," best friend, and loyal guard dog. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings: Colby Kitchens and Sandy Hogan (husband, Warren). Survivors include his beloved wife, Peggy (Luker) Kitchens of Wilbur; children, Adam Kitchens of Carmel, Richard R. Kitchens II of Florida, Nicole Kitchens Carter of Florida; grandchildren, Israel, Samantha, and Courtney all of Martinsville, along with six more grandchildren residing in Florida; brothers, Kenny Kitchens (wife, Charlotte) of Noblesville, Gene Kitchens of Hamilton County, Bobby Kitchens of Westfield; sisters, Linda Brand (husband, Larry) of Michigan, Diana Ottinger (husband, Rick) of Lebanon, and Debbie Kitchens of Westfield; canine companion and loyal sidekick, Mabel. Family and friends are invited to gather from 10:30 to 11:30 am, on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel, in Monrovia. A Graveside Service will begin at Noon, in Mt.
