Joyce Ruth (Roberts) Phillips, 83, of Clayton, Indiana, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Born on October 8, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Joyce was a woman whose strength, determination, and unwavering spirit defined her life. Growing up in foster care taught her resilience at an early age, shaping the fiercely independent woman everyone came to know and love. She was never afraid to speak her mind, often raising an eyebrow or pointing a finger to let you know exactly where she stood. Beneath her spirited and stubborn exterior, however, was a heart overflowing with love, generosity, and devotion to her family. Joyce graduated from Mooresville High School with the Class of 1960. She later worked for Hardee's, Burger Chef, Friendly Inn in Belleville, and Teeter's Florist in Missouri before dedicating herself to the role she treasured most—that of homemaker. A chance double date changed the course of her life when she met the love of her life, Jerry “Cowboy” Wayne Phillips. By their third date, while watching a movie at the drive-in, Jerry stole a quick kiss that marked the beginning of a beautiful love story. They were united in marriage on March 4, 1961, and together shared 61 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and family, until his passing in 2021. Joyce was the heart of her home. She welcomed everyone with open arms, and her house quickly became the place where family and friends naturally gathered. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud grandmother who found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. A self-taught cook, her spaghetti, homemade biscuits and gravy, and campfire breakfasts were legendary—she could easily cook enough to feed an army. An avid horsewoman, Joyce belonged to the Golden Spur Saddle Club, where she faithfully served as secretary, as well as the Hendricks County Saddle Club, Bainbridge Saddle Club, and Halfway Saddle Club in Missouri. She especially enjoyed trail riding at Brown County Horseman's Park and never passed up an opportunity to watch the Kentucky Derby and place a friendly wager on the race. Joyce also loved the sound of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, admiring classic cars and old trucks, camping trips, and creating beautiful flower beds around her home. She was an enthusiastic NASCAR fan who could often be heard cheering—or yelling—at the television while rooting for her favorite driver, Tony Stewart. When she wasn't outdoors or with her horses, she enjoyed watching classic westerns, especially those starring John Wayne. Joyce will be remembered for her strength, quick wit, fiery personality, and the unconditional love she shared with all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she could be feisty and outspoken, her kindness, loyalty, and generous heart left an unforgettable mark on her family and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry “Cowboy” Phillips; infant son, Charles Robert Phillips; and brothers, Ronnie and Jim Roberts. She leaves behind her children, Jerry Lee Phillips (Samantha) of Groveland, Nina May Ashlock (Dennis) of Bradford, AR, and Julia Jennifer Parrish of Clayton; foster siblings, Judy Nash Gregg, Dorothy Nash Green, Sue Rush Dague, Sandy Rush, Stephanie Hughes, Ping Moy, and On Moy; 17 grandchildren; and 35 great grandchildren with one on the way. Cremation Arrangements have been entrusted to Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel, Monrovia. Per Joyce’s wishes, she will be inurned privately in in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall with her late husband, Cowboy.
