Hershel L. Mullins

Hershel L. Mullins, 65, of Brooklyn, left this world unexpectedly on Sunday, February 4, 2024, while in the comfort of his home. He was born in Norton, VA on August 26, 1958, to the late Robert “Bobby” Ray and Evelyn Marie (Gross) Mullins. The oldest of six children and the only boy, Hershel was the apple of his parents’ eyes. In search of prosperity and a better life, the family made the northern journey from Kentucky to the small town of Mooresville when Hershel was a boy. He attended Mooresville schools and met the love of his life, Kandy, at a local gas station. Completely enamored with her beauty, Hershel won her heart, and the pair were joyously united in marriage on June 21, 1980, completing their family with three children, spending 39 wonderful years together before her passing in 2019. Blessed with the ability to fix anything mechanical, a trait passed on to him by his father, Hershel was destined from a young age with a passion for tinkering and turning wrenches. A hard worker and good provider, he was employed for several companies throughout the years as a talented mechanic at Guarantee Auto Nationwise, Goodyear, Hannah Chevrolet, General Shell, Heritage Environmental, and deservingly retired from Theising’s Veneer in 2022. To supplement the family’s income, he worked weekends fixing anyone’s car that was in need. A tight knit family of five, Hershel and Kandy were perfectly paired like peas and carrots. The group spent summers camping at Cataract Lake so the boys could participate in Allstar Baseball Tournaments. A loving and hands-on dad, Hershel and the kids delighted in water fights, and later taught them the same knowledge he inherited from his father. Always patient with them, he was known to be mild mannered and easy-going. A movie buff, with disaster and fantasy films being his favorite, Hershel collected DVDs, and tools-so many tools! He loved fishing, drag racing and NASCAR races while his favorite driver, Dale Earnhart, was still alive, and most recently was a TikTok and YouTube hound. With a wealth of knowledge and an infectious smile, Hershel was hilarious by nature and was quite a jokester. Friendly and outgoing, he could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He loved his family deeply, and especially spoiling his grandchildren. He will be forever remembered and deeply missed. Along with his parents, Hershel was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Kandy Star (Rippy) Mullins. He leaves behind his daughter, Krystal Coughlan (Joey) of Camby, and identical twin sons, Kevin Mullins of Brooklyn, and Khris Mullins of Camby; sisters, Thalia Patricio (Gill) of Hendersonville, NV, Ginny Gardner (Bruce) of Mooresville, Mae Baker (Rick, Sr.) of Mooresville, Trisa Walton (Tim) of Mooresville, and Sandy Amon (Mark) of West Lafayette; grandchildren, Andrew Coughlan (Ceira) of Danville, Anthony, Alibell Coughlan, and Adaleigha Mullins, all of Camby; one great granddaughter, Everliegh Coughlan; along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 11am to 1pm, on Friday, February 9, 2024, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia, with a Celebration of Life Service beginning promptly at 1pm. Pastor Keenan Steinway will officiate services and burial will follow in Centerton Cemetery.
