Geneva A. Brummett

Geneva A. (McCoy) Brummett, 98 years young, of Martinsville passed from this life on October 10, 2021. She was born at home in Brown County, on February 25, 1923, the second of six children to the late Lawrence and Ida (Fleener) McCoy. Raised in the hills and hollers of the lush beauty of southern Indiana, Geneva was a farm girl by birth. A child of the great depression era, she was instilled with a green thumb and the knack to live off the land. After proudly graduating with the 1940 class of Helmsburg high school, she married the love of her life, Arza on October 7. The newlywed couple established their home on a section of her family’s farm, where they raised their two children, passing along her God given gifts of sowing, reaping, cooking, sewing, and crocheting. A member of the Unionville Church of Christ she later attended the Church of Christ in Martinsville. An honored wife and mother of a soldier, Geneva was also a member of the American Legion Post 18. A dedicated employee for RCA, she worked as a group leader, deservingly retiring to take care of her ailing husband. Never one to sit idle, she took on the task of being the local Amway Distributor, selling the reputable products from her garage. While she plunged into different endeavors throughout life, horticulture was her true passion. She had her very own greenhouse room, where she would grow and sell flowers to the local Bloomington florists. After the passing of her husband, she packed her bags and headed to Texas for a year to work and teach people the love of the soil and the capability to sustain life by harvesting the crops they planted. Strong willed and independent, Geneva was well respected, managing to remain calm, cool, and collected even in the most trying times. Family oriented, she enjoyed traveling, seeing all fifty states, and spent every summer visiting various places with her cherished daughter. She was a pioneer before her time, appreciating the benefits of a natural approach to staying young and healthy. She leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, peace, and love, and will be forever missed by all who knew and cherished her. Along with her parents, Geneva was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Arza Brummett; and siblings, Clarice Richardson, Ruby Inez Clay, Dorthea Pather, Wanda Bowman and Lawrence McCoy Jr. She leaves behind her children Norman H. Brummett (Kay) of Franklin, and Norma A. Pate (Kenneth) of Monrovia; grandchildren Steven H. Brummett (Kristi) of Nashville, Eric Rudie (Stephanie) of Whitestown, Anita Jackson (Scott) of Rushville, David K. Pate (Brenda) of Monrovia, Katy Pate (Fred Mau) of Marietta, GA, James Pate of Toledo, OH, and John Pate (Sherry) of Shelbyville; 8 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Monday, October 18, 2021, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel with a Celebration of Life Service beginning promptly at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Dan McLaughlin will officiate, and burial will follow in Little Union Cemetery.
